Mechanical Engineer IV
About KARL STORZ
From the operating room to surgery centers, and everywhere in between, KARL STORZ North America is a global leader in medical technology and advanced visualization solutions. We design specialty innovations, smart instruments and devices, integrated ecosystems, and intelligent imaging to build a more connected, software-enabled operating room.
As an independent, family-owned MedTech company, we ambitiously think in generations instead of quarters to improve patients’ lives around the world.
About the Role
The Mechanical Engineer IV will lead the mechanical design and development of new products used in medical and industrial imaging systems. In this senior-level engineering role, you will translate product requirements into robust mechanical, opto-mechanical, and electro-mechanical designs while leading complex product development and innovation initiatives.
You will serve as the mechanical engineering representative on cross-functional project teams, provide technical guidance to Mechanical Designers and junior engineers, and take ownership of design analysis, testing, documentation, and final design approval. You will also support existing product lines and lead research into new technologies and materials for future products.
What You’ll Do
- Lead the mechanical design and development of new products, from initial concepts through final design approval and production implementation.
- Represent mechanical engineering on cross-functional project teams and take accountability for mechanical project deliverables.
- Develop and evaluate design concepts, trade-offs, and technical solutions that meet product requirements.
- Perform structural (FEA), thermal (CFD), tolerance, torque, and other engineering analyses required to develop robust designs.
- Coordinate and review the work of Mechanical Designers, including component and assembly models and drawings.
- Create and maintain design documentation, including BOMs, solid models, detail drawings, and Design History File documentation.
- Partner with Manufacturing, Quality, Test Engineering, Purchasing, and suppliers to implement new designs and resolve technical challenges.
- Lead research and development of new mechanical, opto-mechanical, electro-mechanical, and materials technologies, including prototype development and testing.
- Provide sustaining engineering support for existing product lines and help resolve manufacturing and field-related issues.
- Provide technical mentorship, design reviews, and guidance to Mechanical Engineers, Mechanical Designers, and interns.
What You Bring
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, or a related field with 10+ years of relevant experience, or a Master’s/Doctorate with 8+ years of experience in mechanical, opto-mechanical, or electro-mechanical design.
- Expert proficiency with CAD software, preferably SolidWorks, including part and assembly modeling, drawings, surfacing, sheet metal, and CircuitWorks.
- Strong experience with engineering simulation and analysis, including FEA, CFD, and tolerance analysis.
- Expert knowledge of industry drafting standards, including ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Strong knowledge of optical design principles, optical materials, coatings, adhesives, sealing techniques, and opto-mechanical design constraints.
- Experience designing mechanical packaging for electronics and close-tolerance assemblies.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes including machining, metal finishing, sheet metal, injection molding, and printed circuit boards.
- Experience working within medical device quality systems and applicable standards, including 21 CFR Part 820, ISO 13485/ISO 9001, and IEC 60601.
- Experience with camera systems for endoscopy or similar medical devices is preferred.
What Will Make You Successful
- Ability to independently lead complex product development and innovation projects from concept through implementation.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to translate product requirements into manufacturable engineering solutions.
- Ability to collaborate effectively across Product Management, Systems Engineering, Electronics, Manufacturing, Quality, Regulatory, Test Engineering, Purchasing, and external suppliers.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to prioritize multiple competing project demands.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to clearly communicate complex technical information.
- A collaborative, team-oriented approach with the ability to mentor others, provide constructive technical reviews, and help improve engineering processes.
